Tips and tricks to help you enjoy a hookah session wherever you are smoking. We have broken the rules down into two categories; general guidelines and rules for any hookah lounge and a set of more time-honored middle eastern traditions that apply to lounges in that region. Check out our hookah blog for a more in depth guide.
Respect the establishment. Follow the house rules of each hookah institution. Being nice will get you far and the server will be more helpful in the end. Let your server tend to the hookah, they know what they are doing.
Don't spread your germs. Hookah lounges should give each person an unopened plastic hookah tip for more hygienic smoking. Do not go to the lounge if you are sick, stay home and smoke by yourself.
Never exhale smoke in someone's face or directly at them. That's rude.
You are smoking with friends, sharing the experience which means sharing the hookah hose. 2 to 3 minutes per turn is a good rule to live by.
Pass the hose in a clockwise rotation. This keeps everything moving smoothly and ensures everyone gets a chance to smoke.
Point the tip of the hookah hose at yourself while passing. Pointing the hose at people can come off as a little rude. Hand the hose butt-end first.
Even when using a multi-hose hookah, you still need to share. Plug your hose while others smoke so they can enjoy a full pull of shisha flavor.
When your group is finished, wrap the hose around the stem of the hookah to notify staff. Never let the hose touch the floor!
The hookah is purposely placed on the floor, do not move it. A hookah is seen as a servant to you and it should never be above the people that are smoking it. It is telling them they are lower than it and a "slave" to the tobacco or nicotine.
This is a very traditional custom. In some countries the left hand is seen as "dirty".
Also very traditional, in some countries you do not pass the hookah hose. Rather, when your turn is done you hang the hose from the stem to let others know it is their turn.
In countries where passing the hose is allowed, when the hose is passed to you slightly tap the hand of the passer as a sign of respect and to say "thank you". Just a very subtle tap, not a high five.
Hookah lounge etiquette can be very subtle. If you don't know, ask. remember to have fun and enjoy smoking with friends. That is what smoking hookah is all about. Ease into it if you are new, take it slow and remember to enjoy it. Don't smoke more than you can handle and always hydrate.
