The Scene
Folks who love 39th Street's Restaurant Row for its variety (from Sun's Korean food to Bell Street Mama's home-cookin') are sure to find Cafe Rumi a welcome part of the neighborhood. Rumi serves many of the common Middle Eastern dishes that Kansas Citians have come to love at restaurants like Pyramids Cafe and Jerusalem Cafe. Hummus, baba ghanouj, tabouleh and dolmades are all on the menu. You'll also find some less-usual fare, such as the house specialty, an entree of grilled sausages. It includes Armenian-style beef sausage and Lebanese beef/lamb sausage served with pita and your choice of a side order. The four different lavosh panini wraps are especially good. Soft flat bread is filled with a mixture of meats, dips, vegetables and/or cheese, and the whole thing is grilled until the bread is crisp and toasty on the outside. The sandwiches are served with a side salad. The plate is big enough to feed two lunch eaters, especially if they're interested in finishing with one of Rumi's excellent desserts. Part of this restaurant's appeal is its prices -- not one item on the menu is over $10, but everything is fresh and delicious. With its urban outdoor dining (plenty to obvserve and discuss) and eclectic ethnic menu (a sense of adventure and lots of uh... garlic?), Cafe Rumi is the perfect place for a first date.
